Featured Speaker – Scott Shane, Professor, Case Western Reserve University
Scott Shane is the A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies and Professor of Economics at Case Western Reserve University. He is an active pre-seed stage angel investor, financing companies directly and through venture capital and accelerator funds.
Scott is currently a limited partner in the Acceleprise and Iconyc accelerator funds, as well as Right Side Capital Management, a pre-seed venture capital fund and EVPI, a seed-stage debt-equity hybrid fund focused on SaaS companies. Scott was an investor in North Coast Angel Fund I. In the past 12 months, he has looked at more than 350 companies for direct investment and funded seven. He currently has 20 direct investments and over 200 indirect investments in startups.
Scott was a Research Fellow at the Burton D. Morgan Foundation and a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He has written online columns on entrepreneurship for Bloomberg Business Week, The New York Times, and Entrepreneur. His book Illusions of Entrepreneurship: The Costly Myths That Entrepreneurs, Investors, and Policy Makers Live by (Yale University Press, 2008) was one of the top ten business books of the year for Amazon.com. His 2005 book Finding Fertile Ground: Identifying Extraordinary Opportunities for New Businesses won the 2006 Golden Book Award for best business book of the year and has been translated into eight languages.
Shane was the 2009 winner of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, the most prestigious award in this academic field.
